Of course, anything connected to Herb's musical identity will always be symbolized by the trumpet being front-and-center; however, this song was actually co-composed by one of the *greatest* session rhythm guitarists of all-time (whom, in the '60s, was among the six touring sidemen comprising Herb's own Billboard phenomenon TIJUANA BRASS band): Staten Island's own JOHN PISANO. Still going strong at 92, too!
John Pisano in his prime:
When the album this track happens to be from was released in late-April 1968, the Counter-Culture of the previous year had already begun to put "the nail in the coffin" of the "Easy Listening"/Instrumental record genre; by essentially laying down the gauntlet of forcing the once very diverse field of "Pop" (as it had been during the first-half of the Sixties) into either turning Hard/Psyche Rock or face becoming a casualty associated with the then tumultuous "over 30" generation gap.
The selling-point of this Alpert album (THE BEAT OF THE BRASS) was its tie-in to a TV special aired that Spring containing the "shocking vocal" hit of Herb singing a Bacharach tune called "This Guy's In Love With You" (one of the Top 4 songs of 1968; after: "Hey Jude"/"People Got to be Free"/and "Mrs. Robinson"). Besides THAT and "Slick": there are also two other tracks (a cover instrumental of the Broadway show theme to "Cabaret" and, an original by fellow '60s A&M Records' marimba/vibes roster holder Julius Wechter entitled "Panama") which, just have such enjoyable musicianship...they redeem this album from (otherwise) being confined to thrift shop oblivion.
To think(?): the deaf-with-tinnitus cokehead and Amazon commerce fraud racketeer/ID thief/federal loan, money laundering felon that runs Hoffman's forum (Neil Peter Rudish of St. Clair Shores, Michigan) has umpteen uploads of this on YouTube; proclaiming to be from a megabuck vinyl playback system --- THE MOFO STILL HAS TO FILTER THROUGH AUDACITY AND CLICKREPAIR FOR AN END RESULT WHICH *WOULD NOT* EVEN SOUND AS GOOD !
